Nutrition

Maine Coon cats consume on average up to twice as much food as smaller breeds.  When choosing a diet, there are three options: organic foods, industrial feeds, and mixed meals.

Maine Coon natural food will consist of about 80 percent of meat and offal.  Preference should be given to lean beef and veal, chicken.  Chicken offal (liver, heart, stomach), beef liver and scars are also included in the main diet.  The remaining 20 percent of food is eggs (preferably quail), dairy products, cereals, vegetables, seafood, herbs and goodies.

It is unacceptable to feed Maine Coons (and other cats too) with cheap industrial food.  It has an attractive taste to animals, but has a low nutritional value and an unbalanced composition.  The animal tries to eat as much of the appetizing-smelling "dummy" as possible, which leads to obesity.  In the long term, the use of economy-class feeds causes severe diseases of the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract.  Premium products are best suited for Maine Coons.  They should be chosen based on the age, state of health and taste preferences of the pet.  It should be borne in mind that veterinarians do not recommend often changing the brand and mixing feed from different manufacturers.

Mixed food, although the choice of some breeders, is highly controversial.  Since commercial feeds are completely balanced, the inclusion of additional foods in the diet can lead to an excess or deficiency of any substances.  Which can lead to serious health problems.

Maine Coons are beautiful and unusual cats with a rich history.  And even though now they are not valued for their hunting qualities, these "little tigers" continue to win the hearts of people around the world.
